My name is Brandon, but I go by Data in the backcountry. I got my trail name, Data, because I love digging into all of the more detailed aspects of gear selection and trip planning that many find boring. I like it almost as much as the trip itself. Unfortunately, I don't get to get out in the backcountry as much as I would like, but I still spend most of my free time ruminating on gear, refining my perfect carry list and trying to come up with awesome places to visit one day.
I hope to use this channel as a way to stay connected to the outdoors in between my far too few backpacking trips. My hope is that if you like backpacking or camping at all, you will find this worth following. Happy Trails!

Big Bend Trip Gear Walkthrough
Took a 6 day trip through West Texas focusing on Big Bend in May, just thought I would do a little discussion on what gear we used and what I thought about it all as I was unpacking and it was fresh in my mind. Apologies for some of the sound issues, I was super tired and forgot to turn the mic around a few times...

I have the F-150 with yhe generator, and a Jackery. Do you think I need the dometic battery also?
We bought a different brand cooler and 3 batteries just in case, we never needed to use them after 4 years. ( on sailboat ) If not too expensive, I think 1 might be a great backup.
@f5debris cool, just used it for work today. On my way in, I put the Jackery on my truck generator. It charged up the 20%, while keeping the dometic running. Loved my 1st experience.
great video. thanks!
Can you have one side off to save power requirements? Only have one side on?
In a hot state like Alabama how big a battery bank is needed to keep it cold 24/7 even when not driving?
Had mine for a couple of years and it truly is a game changer. The Dometic cover is expensive & hard to find, but it’s worth the investment to not only protect the crazy expensive fridge, but it also adds a layer of insulation. At the moment I’m trying to figure out if I need to do anything to run it on 24V, instead of 12. Not sure if I can just plug it in a 24V receptacle, or if there’s a step involved.
Very helpful
Dometic CFX coolers have doubled in prices post C19. I remember shopping and pricing them to get one for a semi truck to eat less fast food or overpriced truck stop food. I want to say these were in the $700 range back then.
Thanks for the Yeti size comparison!
Looks repairable with tenacious tape.
You said 1.43ah per hour of use. Is that as a freezer/fridge set up? Do you have an idea how much wattage it used in a 24 hr period. In trying to size this unit for a new solar set up. Currently I have 400watt system with a 200ah gel deep cycle battery. Any data will really help. Thanks alot
I believe the 1.43 is as a fridge/fridge on their website (it footnotes as ambient 90 degrees, internal 39 degrees). I did one test ages ago where I filled the fridge up with cold water bottles and ran it off my old Ecoflow Delta battery (~1200 watt hours) and got ~73 hours out of it (which I calculated to be 16.8 watts per hour). I recharged my battery and set one side to freezer and got 35 hours out of it (which I calculated to be 35.3 watts per hour - effectively doubling my consumption). This was indoors so call it 72 degrees ambient. I will say, strictly anecdotally, unless it's just absurdly hot outside (I live in Texas so I mean like over 100 degrees) my battery is basically always at 100% with my 100 watt solar panel hooked up at the end of the day running as fridge/fridge if it's sunny outside. Hopefully that helps somewhat.
@@TheDataDispatch thanks bud, yeah this info helps
This is my 12 show on useing pvc to make a tent and its the best one yet!! Thanks so much!!!
Great review. Thank you.
just today got this tent free off craigslist. haven't pitched it yet; but there is a issue with one of the poles. the prior owner already had one pole replace; got it at "louisville sluggers" . i don't know if they sell these still. anyhow, he did say that the tent dries out really quickly after a rainstorm.
Thanks I was deciding between the 45 and the 75 since the difference in price is so little, glad I heard what you had to share im going with the smaller one!
what it is (obvious as shit) and then 90% of your video is uses, which is even more obvious. Captain obvious over here
You didn’t talk about how to use the buttons on it at all, nor did you really explain the remote and you spent way too much time (in my opinion) talking about your uses which is useless because everyone has common sense and can think about what they’re going to use them for, they don’t need you saying “if you have a hatchback you can hang them back here, if you have kids you can make biking safer, and then you use the remote without explaining what buttons you pressed, once again talking about obvious redundant information instead of the only information someone would go to youtube for
I just bought this cooler from Target for $9.99. Didn't realize I needed this review. Salute
I’ve shipped plenty of items to pantagonia and gotten them repaired
It was a freak storm. Weird weather. Winds of 65 70 mph and my boat was totally incapable of actual navigation. Just woke up on the beach one day. Hitting ground. . Really lucky
That thing saved my life. I was sailing from Australia to thiland and was cougt in a huge storm. I thought I was going to die 100 percent. A huge wave broke my sailboat. My mast broke. Then my rudder broke and fell into the ocean. I ended up beaching in lombok. I lost count of how many days I was at see. I had beans and ground beef the whole time. Chili. Every day
This is the kind of product review you want!! Great story
I had one of them. Stolen. I will say amazing. But if u don't clean it and it's inside your rig u will get sick.
I love it for camping/overlanding but we’ve used it to save food for power outages, transport meat that we get from my father in law, used it for overflow for the freezer, etc. it’s definitely really big, if they had a smaller one with the duel zones I would have done that. It’s nice to be able to shut one side off if you don’t need it.
Great review. Thank you. I’m curious how you power it. Do you always keep it plugged into the truck?
20$ military suspended tent mosquito netting
Will is stay cold in the truck overnight if running on truck battery or would you need an extra battery?
It depends on your battery. This 75 Dometic will drain a Jackery 1500 is about 2.5 days. So if you have a smaller battery and or it’s old you could wake up with a dead battery.
I have the same unit that you do. With two gel batteries and a 300 watt solar blanket I can run this on a summer day even on a heavy overcast day. I set the large side as the freezer set to 17 degrees and the smaller size as the refrigerator set to 34. With the freezer loaded up I can manage two weeks boondocking.
Man, I can do 3 months east with my 75 filled. How only two weeks??
What size Amp hour batteries are you using? I have a 400 watt renogy system with a 200 ah renogy gel deep cycle. I trying to figure out if this will run and how much wattage does this unit use as a freezer/fridge in a 24hr period
This video is 6 years old, so please tell me he has a final version completed. Because this is a fantastic concept.
That Yeti is less food after you factor in ice. Less by a ton. I dig my 55IM.
Nice job god bless
You guys need a few more beers!
You basically said nothing.
Weird. I heard many opinions.
Great review
Just put some dry ice in a cooler for a few bucks
Pretty hard to do 100 miles off shore in the Atlantic.
Any video showing how to remove the spigot?
The #cfx3 95 is the best, I've used it in the desert camp last week and didn't need any power for a week, thanks to the #Anker 757 with solar. all cooled and good.
Do u think this 95 will fit on tacoma bed with tonneau cover?
Great review! I got the CFX3 55im and then the CFX3 25 for the beer.😃
My tarp is ( 15 x 20 ) and Covers over front and back with ( jackery outlet for fan )
Get to the point)
Thanks for the tutorial. For somebody who doesn’t want to have to wash the Sleeping gear too often, it’s easy to wash the liner more frequently.
We need to see more data, dispatch
Electric blankets are great for car camping.
Thank you, I was debating between the 55 and 75 but your take on it was exactly what I was thinking.
We live in Canada. We would never consider not having an electric blanket, an inverter, and a spare dedicated 12 volt deep cell battery in our car during the winter. I had spent an overnight in my car in a snowstorm once before.... just do it. \
Why dont you dump the water and weigh how much ice is left.
Love my 95DZ
I didn't think that people that lived in houses like that did meth, who knew?
Thanks
Thanks for posting! I just got the Itty bitty cfx3 25 from dometic and love it. It doubles as an extra freezer when not on the trail!
Greetings and thanks for the excellent video. I agree Domitic is still the top in the line. You piqued my curiosity, what model watch are you using?
Thanks, I have same cooler, but mine is throwing code 33 low voltage. Bran new cooler, new 360ah batteries . Hmm
I just got the cfx3 55im and it's thrown code 33 many times. I've only run it on AC power in my house so far. I will have to call Dometic and see what I should do with it. Frustrating
@@aflacemery yah they will send u a new cooler . If its under warranty and u have recipt
